Classic Salads LLC, Watsonville, Calif., has hired John Burge as vice president
of sales and marketing.
Burge, who worked most recently for Talyor Farms, Salinas, Calif.,where he started the retail division and served as vice president of cut fruit products, will be responsible for expanding the organic and conventional salad programs for foodservice and retail at Classic Salads. Burge starts May 10.
“I enjoy starting and building things up from scratch,” Burge said of why he left Taylor Farms.
Burge said he also started retail programs for companies like Fresh Express and Earthbound Farm in the late 1980s to mid-1990s when the salad category for conventional and organic varieties was just emerging.
Burge worked with the Taylor family to start the packaged salad category at Fresh Express, where he was vice president of sales for five years.
What makes Classic Salads different from the previous companies he’s worked for is that it’s grower-owned, Burge said. That helps keep up quality standards and control on supplies, Burge said.
Classic Salads specializes in the growing and processing of baby leaf salads in bags or clamshell trays under the Classic Salads and private-label brands.
